The Hawaii State Commission on the Status of Women and the Honolulu County Committee on the Status of Women Presents Gardening Classes for Women"
September is Women’s Health Month in Hawaii. Women’s Health Month was initiated in 1994 by the Hawaii State Commission on the Status of Women. The purpose of Women’s Health Month is to maximize public awareness of women’s health issues, empower women to be their own health advocates, reduce health care disparities, and promote the physical and emotional well-being of women in Hawaii. For the 15th year the Hawaii State Commission on the Status of Women is organizing Women’s Health Month. However this year women have the additional issue of dealing with tough economic times while maintaining the health of their families and themselves.
Following the lead of First Lady Michelle Obama this year Women’s Health Month will have an initiative on promoting healthy eating through gardening. So much of our current health care crisis can be tied back to our eating, such as the number one killer of women, heart disease. The Commission will be offering a number of hands-on classes for women to learn organic gardening. Our goal is that women will not only start their own garden but look for opportunities to join with others to start community gardens.
