We welcome your thoughts, either in the
form of a letter or Guest Opinion. The job of selecting
from the vast array of mail falls to Guy Petroziello,
editorial page editor. Every letter sent by regular mail
is read. We require a full name and address as well as
a daytime phone number for verification on all letters
and Guest Opinions. Otherwise standards for publishing
letters have more to do with length, balance and variety
than with any particular slant or viewpoint. Writers are
eligible for publication once every four weeks. Submissions
are edited for taste, libel, style, grammar and length.
Such
letters are limited to 200 words; Guest Opinions are limited
to 700 words. Both are subject to editing, and are not
guaranteed to appear in the paper.
Letters
to the editor appear every day on the editorial page (often
referred to as the opinion page), since they, like editorials,
are expressions of opinion. We get many more letters than
space allows us to print.
Not
accepted: thank-you letters, poetry, classroom
assignments, replies to replies, consumer complaints,
testimonials and letters written as part of an organized
campaign. Submissions from repeat writers on the same
topic that do not cover new ground also may be rejected.
Documentation may be required before publication.
The
Courier Times receives an average of 50 letters to the
editor every week and publishes only four to five every
day, plus one Guest Opinion, because of limited space.
On Mondays a full page of letters and Guest Opinions is
published.
Election
letters:
The deadlines for submitting election-related letters
and Guest Opinions is four weeks prior to the upcoming
Election Day. The deadline for submitting responses to
election letters and Guest Opinions is two - three weeks
before the Election. Letters and Guest Opinions should
be issued-and record-oriented. Personal attacks will not
be published. The Courier Times might require documentation
before publishing some letters and Guest Opinions. (Read
